Product FAQs

What are the smallest dimensions the mirrors can be made?

Our smallest MirrorLite® Glassless Mirror is 3” x 5”.

What are the largest dimensions?

MirrorLite® MEGA Glassless Mirrors are the widest glass mirrors in the world. Instock sizes are 96” x 96” and 120” x 120”.  Our custom MirrorLite® MEGA glassless mirror panel maximum width is 144”.  Panel length is theoretically limitless and can be customized for your requirements. Our longest optical mirror panel to date is 34 feet long.

How thick is the mirror frame?

Frame thickness is related to size because the panel gains its stability from the internal frame. Our standard mirror thicknesses range from 3/4” for the smaller panels to 2 1/2” for the larger (over 144” × 240”).

What is a rear projection glassless mirrors?

Rear projection (RP) mirrors are optical mirrors that are used in rear projection installations in which a translucent screen is projected on from behind. One or more mirrors are used to fold the optical path (focal distance of the projector, or the distance the projector must be in order to focus properly on the screen.) The reason why the path is folded is to save space, especially considering the high cost of real estate! Rear projection is preferable to front projection (think: classic movie theater) in environments where ambient lighting is uncontrolled or too bright. This is why you will see RP in use, for example, on most news programs where the anchor sits before a screen onto which are projected various images. If the image were to be projected from the front, it would be washed out by the strong lighting on the set.

What is a scrim glassless mirror?

For some applications customers uses a “scrim film," or "two-way," mirror which is metalized to approximately 50% light transmission. This means that panels made with this film are reflective surfaces when lit from the front, and become transparent when lit from behind. Although this type of mirror is not used in the traditional rear projection installation, it is used in theatrical applications for special effects, as well as in commercial applications as security mirrors.

Does a glassless mirror panel offer thermal insulation?

The core of a MirrorLite® Glassless Mirrors is effective as thermal insulation. In the interest of energy conservation, particularly in air-conditioned structures, consideration should be given to the insulation value of a MirrorLite® Glassless Mirrors. For example, our 1-1/4" thick MirrorLite® Glassless Mirror panels have a minimum R-value of 6.5.

Does a glassless mirror panel offer acoustical dampening properties?

While not intended as a sound absorber, a MirrorLite® Glassless Mirrors mirror will absorb some acoustical energy, depending on frequency. Absorption is generally greater at higher frequencies. In any case, it does not reflect sound to the same degree as glass or metal.

Can a glassless mirror panel be used out-of-doors?

Outdoor use, while not specifically recommended, is possible for limited duration. Short term display or exhibit use in a sheltered location would probably be acceptable. The purchaser assumes responsibility for determining suitability.

Can a glassless mirror be used as an optical or front surface mirror?

Yes, a special grade of glassless mirror (92% reflectivity) is made specifically for use as front surface mirrors for optical purposes.  These are available on special order and are most often used instead of glass when large size optical mirrors are required. We suggest that for optical applications, the projected image be contained within 1” of the edges of the glassless mirror surface to avoid minor image distortions that would be magnified in projection.  Glassless mirrors used for general purposes have a reflection of 86%.

Can a glassless mirror be decorated, painted on, etc.?

Yes, a MirrorLite® Glassless Mirrors can be silkscreened or painted with acrylic paints for decorative effects or graphic treatments such as decals or appliqués.
